osteopathy

What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. It works with the structure and function of the body and is based on the principle that the well-being of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues functioning smoothly together.

Osteopaths use touch, physical manipulation, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of joints, to relieve muscle tension, to enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues, and to help your body’s own healing mechanisms. We also provide advice on posture and exercise to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms recurring.

What does osteopathic treatment involve?

Each osteopathic treatment at our Eastwood and North Sydney clinics begins with a physical examination and comprehensive overview of any issues or pain you have experienced. This testing includes understanding how your particular spine functions along with structural and neurological components.

Your osteopath will then make a diagnosis based on your personal history, including how long the issue has been effecting you, your age and other factors. There are an extensive range of techniques available in order to remedy your problems, from ultrasounds and stretching to laser technology, gentle spinal manipulation and mobilisation, muscle release and trigger point therapies.

Further recommendations or treatment advice may then be given to you, including home exercise programs, lifting procedures, postural recommendations, diet advice, stress management or a referral to another specialist who can help manage all of your health needs.

History of Osteopathy in Australia

Osteopaths have practiced in Australia since 1908, however this practice has been used internationally since 1872. Today, it is necessary to undertake five years’ full-time study completing a double degree with National government registration before being afforded the title of Doctor.

What referrals and compensation claims are available for osteopathy treatments?

Unlike other forms of treatment, you do not need a referral from a GP in order to see an Osteopath about general problems you may be experiencing. The majority of health funds will rebate a portion of your treatment fees however, under Medicare, osteopathy has limited cover. Many patients who are experiencing complex, chronic issues can be referred to osteopathic treatment by their GP.

With the appropriate paperwork, third party claims and worker’s compensation injuries are accepted. Most employers and companies will also accept sickness certificates issued by registered osteopaths.

Foot scans

Foot Levellers Foot Scan

As a part of your consultation at Healthwise, our Osteopaths use Foot Levellers foot scanning machines. We perform a foot scan to show you how imbalances in the feet can lead to problems in the knees, hips, back and shoulders. The foot scan will show how Functional Orthotics may help. Following a foot scan, a report will provide you a Pronation/Stability Index, a Foot Assessment, and a Body Assessment.
