Laser in physical therapy

What is laser therapy?

Laser therapy, also known as low-level laser therapy (LLLT) or cold laser therapy, is a non-invasive treatment focused on pain relief and tissue repair.

In laser therapy, low-intensity lasers or light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are placed near or on the skin to allow the light energy to penetrate the body and interact with the tissue on a cellular level. Light induces various reactions in damaged tissue to improve circulation in the area, reduce inflammation, accelerate healing and regeneration, and aid in restoring regular cellular function.

What conditions can laser therapy be used to treat?

Laser therapy can be utilised to treat a range of conditions, most of which fall under the following categories:

  • Injuries and sprains
  • Aches and pains
  • Sports trauma
  • Inflammation and bruising
  • Surgery recovery and wound healing
  • Arthritis

Your Healthwise practitioner will determine whether your condition is suitable for laser therapy.

What are the benefits of laser therapy?

As a therapy, laser is effective as it can target a particular part of the body, penetrating deep into the tissue, without affecting the surrounding areas.

There are no known side affects to laser therapy and it is a completely painless process, acting as an effective, drug-free treatment.

Other benefits of laser therapy include:

  • Reduction of inflammation
  • Analgesic
  • Tissue repair and cell growth
  • Improved vascular activity
  • Increased metabolic activity
  • Reduction in fibrous tissue formation
  • Improved nerve function
  • Immunoregulation
  • Faster wound healing

Depending upon your condition and symptoms, benefits may be felt after 3-12 treatments.
